Final Score: Memphis 110, New Jersey 103
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Pau Gasol scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies over the New Jersey Nets, 110-103, at the Izod Center.
Mike Miller added 19 points and nine assists for the Grizzlies, who won consecutive games for the first time this season. Juan Carlos Navarro tallied 16 points and 11 boards and Damon Stoudamire recorded 13 points and six assists for Memphis, which won in New Jersey for the first time since March 24, 2005.
Vince Carter scored a season-high 32 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead the Nets, who returned home from a four-game road trip to have their three-game win streak halted. Richard Jefferson added 27 points and Jason Kidd had his fourth triple-double of the season for New Jersey, which has lost five straight at home.
Kidd ended with 12 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists, registering the 91st triple-double of his career to remain in third place all-time. Only Magic Johnson (138) and Oscar Robertson (181) have more.
After trailing by as many as 18 points earlier in the contest and going into the fourth down just five points, a Bostjan Nachbar three-pointer at the 8:36 mark of the final quarter drew the Nets within 87-86.
Memphis answered by scoring eight of the next nine points with Gasol hitting a jumper with 6:04 left to make it 95-87.
Jefferson eventually converted a three-point play at the 3:16 mark to draw within 97-94. He then hit a pair of free throws with 2:05 left to make it a 99-98 game.
However, the Grizzlies secured the game shortly thereafter. Kyle Lowry converted a layup at the other end. Then, after a Jefferson missed three- pointer with 1:19 left, Navarro made two free throws with 1:15 remaining. He then added 1-of-2 nine seconds later, making it 104-98.
Nachbar had a chance to draw the Nets within one point with 24 seconds remaining, but his three-pointer hit off the front of the rim and the Grizzlies secured the game at the free throw line.
"We've been in a lot of close games this year and have not been very successful in most of them," said Gasol. "When it comes down to it we're going to grow, we're going to improve and we're going to get better in those situations.
"We're finally getting it together and being confident about what we're doing out there and winning."
Lowry ended with 10 points for the Grizzlies, who improved to just 2-5 on the road.
Memphis led 28-25 after one quarter and extended to a 13-point halftime lead, 58-45. Then, Stoudamire drained a three-pointer and Miller followed with a dunk to open the third quarter, giving the Grizzlies an 18-point cushion, 63-45.
New Jersey, though, quickly responded, scoring the next five points to again cut the deficit to 13 points. Later, down 14, the Nets went on a 13-5 run to cut the deficit to six points. Carter hit consecutive layups, the final one coming with 2:55 left in the quarter, to make it a 77-71 contest.
Carter later hit a three-pointer to draw New Jersey within 80-76, but a Lowry free throw sent the Grizzlies into the fourth with an 81-76 edge.
"It's disappointing," said Jefferson. "We have to find a way to have more energy at the beginning of the game...We've got to figure this out as a team."
Kidd moved into a tie with the Warriors franchise for triple-doubles. There are only five franchises left that have more triple-doubles than he does...He has 53 triple-doubles with New Jersey...Memphis hit 11-of-22 three-pointers, while New Jersey hit just 7-of-24 from beyond the arc.
