Final Score: Washington 110, Dallas 98
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Caron Butler scored 35 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards over the Dallas Mavericks, 110-98, at American Airlines Center.
Antawn Jamison added 27 points and six boards for Washington, which ended a two-game slide and improved to 1-1 on its current four-game road trip. Antonio Daniels had 16 points and six assists and DeShawn Stevenson tallied 13 points for the Wizards, who have won seven of nine and moved back to the .500 mark for the season.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists for the Mavericks, who suffered their first loss in seven games at home this year. Josh Howard tallied 17 points and Devin Harris had 12 points and seven assists for Dallas, which has lost three in a row.
Dallas led 28-26 after one quarter, but the Wizards went into halftime with a 47-45 edge after just a 17-point second quarter by the Mavs. Nowitzki had scored 17 points in the first quarter.
Washington then used a 10-0 run in the third to begin to build its lead. With the game tied 54-54, Daniels started the run with a three-point play and Stevenson ended it with a pair of free throws at the 5:48 mark for a 64-54 cushion.
Later, a Butler three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the stanza gave the Wizards their largest lead to that point, 85-72, heading into the fourth.
"I think I could have changed the momentum and some of the aspect of the game, but I wasn't in the game," said Howard, who was in foul trouble. "Overall though, they (Washington) came in and made some big shots in the third quarter."
The Wizards kept the Mavs at bay early on in the fourth before beginning to pull away more than midway through the stanza. An 11-2 run capped by a Jamison layup with 4:01 left gave Washington a 107-88 lead.
Dallas never seriously threatened after that as the Wizards cruised to the final buzzer.
"We knew, playing in a place like this, that you have to be somewhat defensively sound and make it tough for these guys," said Jamison. "They got it rolling in the first quarter but we kept our composure. Offensively we ran what we wanted to run and defensively we made it tough for them."
Washington has won two straight over the Mavs...Dallas is on its longest losing streak since dropping four straight to start last season...The Mavs have lost four games to Eastern Conference teams this season.
