NBA Game Summary - Seattle at Charlotte
(Saturday, November 17th)
Final Score: Charlotte 100, Seattle 84
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Gerald Wallace scored 27 points and Charlotte used a big second half, on the way to a 100-84 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
Jason Richardson scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half for the Bobcats (5-4), who are at their latest point in a season above .500. Prior to this season, the team had never been over .500 through more than three games. The Bobcats held a huge 60-38 advantage on the boards.
"We didn't want to give them second and third chances," Wallace said. "We wanted to come in and limit them to one shot. We were able to get the boards and get out and run."
Emeka Okafor tallied 12 points and game-best 15 rebounds for the Bobcats, who bounced back from a 117-109 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday. They outscored the Sonics, 53-35, in the second half. Raymond Felton had 13 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds in the victory.
Chris Wilcox led the way with 24 points and nine boards for Seattle, which had a two-game winning streak broken. The Sonics were coming off a 126-123 double- overtime triumph at Atlanta Friday on rookie Kevin Durant's three at the buzzer to win the contest. Durant had 16 points on just 3-of-12 shooting Saturday night.
"We have to compete more," Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We have guys getting the ball ripped out of their hands. We've got guys not passing the ball on fast breaks to other guys who are open. I mean stuff like that, that's inexcusable."
A jumper by Mickael Gelabale tied the game at 66 for the Sonics with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Bobcats responded with the next nine points. The big blow was a three by Wallace, and Felton's free throw capped the burst with 1:22 left in the stanza.
Charlotte led 77-70 going into the fourth, and Matt Carroll drained a three in the opening minute to extend the advantage to double digits. Walter Herrmann followed with a three ball of his own for the home team, and Seattle got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The exclamation point came when Felton dished off his 10th assist, an alley- oop jam to Wallace with 7:30 left, extending the margin to 90-74.
Carroll ended with 14 points.
Damien Wilkins contributed 19 points and Jeff Green 11 for the Sonics, who struggled by shooting 31 percent from the field.
Charlotte surged to a 13-5 lead, but the Sonics rallied and had the contest even at 22 going into the second quarter.
The Bobcats got the upper hand again early in the second, moving to a 35-25 lead, but the Sonics surged back with 10 straight later in the period for a 43-42 lead following a Green layup. Seattle led 49-47 at the half, and extended the margin to 58-50 with 8:25 left in the third following a Durant layup.
However, Charlotte scored the next eight, culminated by a Felton layup.
The Bobcats trail the all-time series 5-2, with the only previous victory coming at home on February 6, 2006. The two teams will meet again March 12 in Seattle...This was Charlotte's first win over a Western Conference opponent this season...The Sonics are 2-2 on their road trip, which ends Monday in Memphis.
