NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Orlando
(Saturday, December 15th)
Final Score: Memphis 123, Orlando 119
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay scored 32 points and raked in seven rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies survived another dominant performance by Dwight Howard to down the Orlando Magic, 123-119.
Howard poured in 31 points on 10-of-11 shooting and ripped down 20 rebounds to lead the Magic, who have dropped four of five.
"We just have to pick it up," said Howard. "The main thing is that we have to get stops and we haven't been able to do that. Other teams are getting to the paint too easily; other teams are shooting the ball extremely well."
Juan Carlos Navarro scored 27 points for the Grizzlies, who stemmed a six-game skid with the win. Mike Miller added 19 points and eight rebounds for Memphis.
Hedo Turkoglu scored 24 points for Orlando, and Jameer Nelson finished with 18 points. Keith Bogans added 16 points for the Magic.
Howard picked his game up in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points after netting 19 in the first three quarters combined. After three straight baskets by Gay gave the Grizzlies a 91-90 lead with just under 10 minutes left, Howard made two free throws to put Orlando back on top.
Those two free throws started a stretch where Howard scored 12 of 14 Magic points. A three-point play with 9:01 remaining gave the Magic a 95-93 lead, but Gay answered by drilling a three to put Memphis on top.
"We really needed this one," said Gay. "I guess I stepped up. A lot of guys stepped up."
Howard slammed home an alley-oop to put the Magic back on top, 97-96, but again the Grizzlies answered with a three-pointer, this time by Navarro, and the Grizzlies led 99-97.
A Howard layup with 5:46 remaining put the Magic on top 103-101, but the Grizzlies answered with a 9-1 stretch, fueled by threes from Miller and Navarro, the latter pushing the Memphis lead to 110-104 with 3:02 to play.
The Magic drew within 112-109 on two Turkoglu free throws with 1:44 left, but Navarro answered with the dagger, a three with 45 seconds to play that put Memphis up 115-109.
The Grizzlies sank 8-of-8 free throws in the final 34 seconds to ice the win.
Orlando led 59-55 at the half, and took an 88-85 lead into the fourth quarter.
It was Howard's third career 30-20 game. Orlando is only 1-2 in those games... Memphis ended a six-game losing streak in Orlando...Navarro was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.
