NBA Game Summary - Houston at Charlotte
(Sunday, November 11th)
Final Score: Houston 85, Charlotte 82
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Yao Ming scored a season-high 34 points and drained two free throws with 20.4 seconds left, as the Houston Rockets came back to beat the Charlotte Bobcats, 85-82.
Tracy McGrady added 26 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter for the Rockets, who erased a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to win their third straight game.
"This was a game that we should have lost because we didn't play really well," McGrady said. "But it also goes to show how good we can be."
Matt Carroll led a balanced Bobcats scoring attack with 17 points. Jason Richardson and Raymond Felton added 16 points apiece, Gerald Wallace scored 10 and Emeka Okafor had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which has dropped three of four.
"I don't think there's a better 1-2 combination in the league," Wallace said of McGrady and Yao. "They might be the best 1-2 combination since MJ (Michael Jordan) and (Scottie) Pippen."
Carroll's three-pointer with 6:05 left in the fourth pushed the Bobcats lead to 74-67. Houston, though, closed the game with an 18-8 run.
McGrady drilled two from the charity stripe to tie the game at 78-78 with 1:24 to go. Richardson then hit a driving layup to briefly put the Bobcats back ahead by two 17 seconds later.
McGrady, however, responded with a three-point play to again put his Rockets on top, 81-80, with 54 ticks left.
Felton made a couple free throws to give the Bobcats their final lead before Yao's two foul shots gave Houston the lead for good.
After Wallace was whistled for an offensive foul with three seconds left, Mike James made two from the foul line and Shane Battier stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory.
Richardson's triple with 2:40 left in the second quarter gave Charlotte a 40-30 lead but Yao, who scored the final 11 points for Houston in the second quarter, cut the lead to 40-35 with a turnaround jumper with two seconds left in the half.
The Rockets took their first lead of the second half with 8:51 to go in the third quarter. McGrady's tip-in made the score 45-44 in favor of Houston before Felton canned a jumper with 8:17 left in the frame to put the Bobcats back ahead.
A Wallace jumper with 10:25 left in the fourth quarter gave Charlotte a 69-60 lead, its largest of the second half.
