NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Utah
(Saturday, November 10th)
Final Score: Utah 118, Memphis 94
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Carlos Boozer scored 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz over the Memphis Grizzlies, 118-94, at EnergySolutions Arena.
Deron Williams added 20 points and 13 assists for the Jazz, who have won three straight. Andrei Kirilenko fell one assist shy of a triple-double, recording 15 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out nine assists, as Utah improved to 5-2 so far this season.
"We got some good shots, were able to get the ball inside, we were able to pass the ball extremely well and got our hands on the basketball," said Utah head coach Jerry Sloan. "Andrei, he's played terrific as of late. He's made some terrific passes and he's played extremely well."
Rudy Gay had a team-high 18 points to lead the Grizzlies, who have dropped two straight. Pau Gasol ended with just 11 points for Memphis, which has lost four of five games this season.
"Well I think we helped them control the tempo by turning the ball over," said Memphis head coach Marc Iavaroni. "Twenty-five turnovers on a night is not going to allow us to have any rhythm offensively and then defensively it's the toughest thing to guard because they're off and running.
Leading 36-30 after one quarter and holding a 38-33 edge early in the second, the Jazz went on a 21-7 run to begin to pull away. Williams scored nine points during the surge, which was capped by a Boozer jumper with 1:55 left in the half for a 59-40 cushion. Boozer had six points during the surge, which allowed the Jazz to cruise into halftime with a 64-49 advantage.
Utah extended to a 25-point lead, 85-60, after Jason Hart hit a free throw with 1:47 left in the third quarter, going into the fourth with an 89-71 lead.
The Grizzlies never threatened over the final 12 minutes, as the Jazz cruised to the finish.
"If we're going to be a good team, that's what we have to do," said Boozer of the Jazz's defense. "We know that we can score, we have a lot of guys that can put the ball in the basket, but for us to be a good team we have to play good defense. Obviously, we know that we still have a lot to improve on, but you know, one step at a time."
Gordan Giricek ended with 16 points and Ronnie Brewer added 10 points for the Jazz, who have won three straight over Memphis.
