NBA Game Summary - New Orleans at Portland

(Wednesday, November 7th)

Final Score: Portland 93, New Orleans 90

Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Jarrett Jack had 20 points, and made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute, to help the Portland Trail Blazers edge the New Orleans Hornets, 93-90.

Martell Webster also had 20 points, and Brandon Roy added 17 for Portland, which won its first game of the season. Joel Przybilla had 11 rebounds in addition to nine points, and LaMarcus Aldridge had 12 points and eight rebounds.

David West tied a career-high with 34 points, and added 18 rebounds to help carry the Hornets, who lost for the first time in five games this season. Chris Paul added 18 points and 12 assists, and Tyson Chandler had 11 points and eight rebounds for New Orleans.

After a competitive first half, when the Hornets took a 49-44 lead into the locker room, the teams went on some big runs in the second half and split the game apart.

The first was a 16-0 run that came almost four minutes into the third quarter, and lasted for nearly five minutes on the game clock. With the Hornets leading 60-56, Webster hit a three-pointer to start the Portland rally.

He hit two more threes in the run, and capped it off by sinking a technical free throw with 3:36 left in the quarter. That made the score 72-60, and the Blazers extended that lead to a game-high 15. Jack hit two jumpers in the beginning of the fourth quarter to give Portland an 80-65 lead.

But the Hornets went on their run, 11-0, shortly thereafter. Hilton Armstrong started it with a jumper with 8:48 left, and West helped sustain it with a tip-in and the final basket - an 18-footer, making the score 81-77, Blazers.

That was as close as New Orleans would get down the stretch until the last shot, as the Blazers got their feet back under them. The final four minutes were a series of trading baskets and making free throws, mostly by Jack's last, with five seconds left, put the Blazers up 93-87. Bobby Jackson hit a three with time expiring for New Orleans.

For most of the first half, West carried the Hornets, and was the only player in double-digits after the first half. But his teammates helped claim the lead at the end of the half, after trailing for most of it.

Leading by a point with three minutes left, Peja Stojakovic hit a three, and Chandler dunked an alley-oop pass to extend the New Orleans lead to six. Paul hit a jumper with just under a minute left to give the Hornets their biggest lead of the night, 49-42.
