NBA Game Summary - Phoenix at Atlanta

(Wednesday, November 7th)

Final Score: Atlanta 105, Phoenix 96

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Josh Smith scored 22 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked five shots, as Atlanta beat the Phoenix Suns, 105-96, at Philips Arena.

Marvin Williams totaled 20 points and 12 boards, while Josh Childress contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who bounced back after close defeats at Detroit and at New Jersey, losing those games by a combined six points.

"We feel good about our chances this year," Smith said. "We have a good team. I think we should be 4-0."

Rookie Al Horford had eight points and 15 rebounds for the Hawks, who beat the Suns for just the fourth time in the last 17 meetings.

Steve Nash scored 34 points, going 7-of-10 from three-point range, and dished out 11 assists for the Suns, who again played without forward Amare Stoudemire, as he sat out his third straight game with a sore right knee. Shawn Marion finished with 20 points and 14 boards, but Phoenix was outrebounded, 56-40. The loss came a night after the Suns won at Charlotte, 115-83.

"They played well," Phoenix's Grant Hill said. "Both teams played last night. We knew whoever came out with more energy would give themselves a chance to win. They killed us in the first half, second-chance points (19-3). They got the momentum from that."

A Nash jumper pulled the Suns within 92-89 with 3:50 remaining, but the Hawks iced the victory by scoring the next seven points. It was capped by a three- point play from Smith, who missed a pair of tip-ins, but then scored on the third try with 1:47 remaining.

The Suns couldn't get closer than six points in the final minute.

Joe Johnson shot just 3-of-17 from the floor, but had 15 points and 10 assists for the Hawks, who also got 10 points from Salim Stoudamire and were inspired by a sellout crowd of 19,855.

A 7-2 run to end the first quarter gave Atlanta a 32-27 lead and a pair of free throws from Childress moved the margin to 40-31. Two straight jumpers from Horford moved the margin to 10 points and the Hawks were ahead 55-47 at the half.

The Suns were within 60-59 after a Nash three, but they couldn't go ahead as the Hawks were in front 80-76 going into the fourth.
