NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Atlanta
(Tuesday, December 4th)
Final Score: Detroit 106, Atlanta 95
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tayshaun Prince's 23 points led seven Pistons in double-figures, as Detroit downed the Atlanta Hawks, 106-95, in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.
Prince sank 9-of-12 from the field, including two three-pointers for Detroit, which won its fourth in a row and it's sixth in seven games. Jarvis Hayes scored 17 points off the bench, and Richard Hamilton had 14 points and seven assists. Chauncey Billups had 10 points and 10 assists for the Pistons, who outscored Atlanta by 17 points in the third quarter alone, and led by 26 points entering the fourth quarter.
Josh Childress scored 18 points for the Hawks, who have split their last four games. Salim Stoudamire scored 15 points off the bench, and Al Horford had eight points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta.
Detroit pulled away in the third quarter, when it outscored the Hawks, 30-13. A Horford dunk and a Josh Smith layup pulled Atlanta to within 57-52 with 11:02 remaining, but the Pistons responded with 24-5 stretch that spanned almost 10 minutes. Rasheed Wallace and Prince each sank a three on the run, closed by a Jason Maxiell jumper that put Detroit ahead 81-57 with 1:58 left.
Detroit led 87-61 entering the fourth quarter, and the Hawks only made the final score more respectable after the Pistons went deep into their bench.
"We're playing good basketball right now," said Prince. "The last four or five games we've really been doing a good job of moving the ball, but it's been our defense which has been good. We've been creating some turnovers, blocking some shots, and that's been the key to our offense."
The Pistons led 33-26 after the first quarter.
The Hawks pulled to within two points of the Pistons several times in the second quarter, and trailed by only four points in the last two minutes. Detroit closed the first half with a Maxiell three-point play and two Hamilton free throws, though, and took a 57-48 lead into the break.
"You know that's a team that doesn't relinquish the lead very often," said Childress. "We kind of dug ourselves in a hole. That's one of those teams that you can't really dig out of against. We have to learn from this loss."
The Pistons registered 10 blocked shots, to only two by the Hawks. Detroit's Amir Johnson came off the bench and blocked five shots in only eight minutes of playing time...Atlanta's Zaza Pachulia didn't dress because of concussion-like symptoms...Detroit shot a sizzling 51.9 percent from the field, and 60 percent (6-of-10) from behind the three-point arc...Maxiell finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for Detroit.
