NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Indiana
(Wednesday, January 2nd)
Final Score: Memphis 90, Indiana 72
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Pau Gasol scored 30 points and collected 12 rebounds to help the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Indiana Pacers, 90-72, in a matchup of struggling teams at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Mike Miller finished with 19 points and 11 boards, as Memphis broke a five- game losing streak. Rudy Gay had 24 points, while Mike Conley scored seven, had eight assists, and six rebounds, in his first NBA start.
Mike Dunleavy scored 16, while Troy Murphy had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Indiana, which had its losing streak reach five games. The Pacers again played without guard Jamaal Tinsley, out with a hamstring injury.
After being down by a point at halftime, Memphis began the second half with a 13-2 run. Murphy connected on a jumper to open the scoring, but Gasol hit a pair of free throws to begin Memphis' run.
Gay had five points, and Darko Milicic finished it with a layup to put the Grizzlies up 55-46, which was the only surge they'd need to hold out for the win. Memphis took a 71-63 edge going into the fourth.
"I thought we really pushed the ball tonight, made them work hard on defense," Gay said. "I felt everybody came in and had their part in this game."
Several minutes into the final stanza, Marquis Daniels hit a three to bring the Pacers back within seven, but Gasol and Miller answered with buckets of their own to put Memphis back up by double-digits with 7:09 left in the game.
The Grizzlies' lead only grew from there. With just under five minutes left, Stromile Swift banked in a jumper to give Memphis an 85-71 lead.
The Grizzlies cruised to the win, as Indiana scored just one point in the final five minutes and shot 26 percent in the second half.
"That was a very, very poor second half," Pacers head coach Jim O'Brien said. "Every loss is disturbing and painful. It's our job to figure it out. Anytime you lose five in a row, you take a step back."
Jermaine O'Neal was a non-factor for the Pacers, as the forward finished with four points and nine rebounds, and didn't score in the second half.
Memphis held a 26-22 lead after one quarter, and the Pacers took a slim, 44-43 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
Indiana shot 30.8 percent for the game, while Memphis shot at a 46.2 percent clip...Each team had 49 rebounds and 17 turnovers.
