NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Houston

(Thursday, March 22nd)

Final Score: Houston 91, Detroit 85

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Yao Ming scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and the Houston Rockets downed the Detroit Pistons, 91-85.

Tracy McGrady scored 20 points and tallied eight assists for the Rockets, who won their fifth straight. Rafer Alston added 16 points, six assists, and six boards for Houston.

Antonio McDyess scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost three of four, but still hold a 2 1/2 game lead over idle Cleveland for first place in the Central Division, and in the Eastern Conference.

Rasheed Wallace had 13 points and nine boards, and Chauncey Billups added 13 points and six rebounds for Detroit.

The Pistons trailed by 20 in the third quarter, and by 18 early in the fourth, but managed to make things interesting, pulling to within four points late in regulation before succumbing to the home team.

Yao hit a turnaround jumper with 8:19 left in the game that boosted the Rockets to an 80-62 advantage. Carlos Delfino made two three-pointers to fuel a 20-6 stretch, though, which Billups capped with a trey to slice the Rockets lead to 86-82 with 2:44 left.

However, the Pistons ran out of gas. Even though the Rockets left the door open by only scoring five points in the last 2:32, the Pistons could only score three points over the same span, with Billups and Wallace both missing threes down the stretch as Houston held on for the win. Alston made a key jumper to put Houston up 88-82 with 2:32 left, and a McGrady jumper less than a minute later put the Rockets ahead 90-83.

Houston led 73-56 entering the fourth quarter.

The Rockets took a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, and pulled ahead 48-35 at the half.
