NBA Game Summary - Miami at Chicago
(Wednesday, December 27th)
Final Score: Chicago 109, Miami 103
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Ben Gordon scored a season-high 40 points off the bench with five assists as Chicago edged Miami, 109-103, at the United Center.
Gordon finished an impressive 11-of-17 from the field and 17-of-19 from the line while Andres Nocioni posted 16 points in the victory.
Kirk Hinrich poured in 14 points and dished out five helpers for the Bulls, who have won seven of their last nine games. Tyrus Thomas netted 10 points and Ben Wallace added nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Chicago shot 48 percent from the floor.
"It was a hard fought win at the end," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "We did what happens a lot, we got a big lead, and allowed them to creep back into it. We played well enough to win down the stretch."
Jason Williams scored 28 points with six assists for the Heat, who were without All-Star guard Dwyane Wade for most of the contest. Wade left the game in the first quarter with a sprained right wrist and did not return. He appeared to injure his wrist while covering Hinrich and finished scoreless on 0-for-2 from the field.
Wade is averaging 28.6 points and 8.2 assists this season for the Heat, who are already without center Shaquille O'Neal. The standout center has been out since November 12 when he tore knee cartilage against the Houston Rockets.
"We'll have to look at his last x-rays," said Miami head coach Pat Riley. "He's always had some problem with it."
Jason Kapono donated 18 points and Dorell Wright had 17 with 14 boards in defeat.
Chicago led 78-71 after three quarters of play, however, Miami remained competitive in the fourth but came up short despite a 31-point frame.
After Williams hit a jump shot to give Miami a 100-99 lead with 1:25 left in regulation, Gordon answered with a layup and a free throw to put the Bulls up by two.
Gordon then converted three times from the charity stripe after a pair of Chris Quinn fouls and Chicago held a 107-102 cushion with 11.4 seconds remaining.
The Heat, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, finished 46 percent shooting and were 12-of-24 (50 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Bulls ended the first quarter with a slim 24-21 edge, and opened the second with a 17-2 burst finished up by Hinrich's trey with 7:10 left. Miami, though, cut within 12 at 57-45 on Wright's jumper to close out the frame.
In the third, the Heat made it a five-point game, 76-71, when Kapono drilled a jump shot at the 1:19 mark. However, Wallace countered for Chicago with a jumper of his own to put the Bulls up by seven entering the fourth.
Miami's Udonis Haslem scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds...Luol Deng contributed eight points with 11 rebounds for Chicago.
