NBA Game Summary - New Jersey at Portland
(Wednesday, November 22nd)
Final Score: Portland 100, New Jersey 97
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph posted 25 points and eight rebounds, as the Portland Trail Blazers came back to edge the New Jersey Nets, 100-97, at the Rose Garden.
With the score deadlocked at 90, Randolph scored a running hook in the lane with 2:51 left in the fourth to give Portland its first lead of the game.
Randolph missed virtually the same shot with about 45 seconds left, but Richard Jefferson got called for an offensive foul on the other end. Portland then missed three shots, while not having to shoot, with the shot-clock turned off.
Randolph got the offensive rebound of his own shot and fouled. He converted a pair of free throws with 12.5 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.
Vince Carter then got fouled on a finger roll and converted a three-point play with 9.9 seconds remaining for a one-point game. Randolph next got fouled and hit a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds on the clock, and Carter and Jefferson both missed game-tying three-pointers to preserve the win for Portland.
"I love the fight in this team," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "I loved the fact that we had only six turnovers. That's been an area of concern all year. What I saw was a lot of team unity, players encouraging teammates to continue to play for the lead."
Jarrett Jack scored 17 points for the Trail Blazers, who have won two of three. Travis Outlaw netted 13 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Carter scored 35 points for the Nets, who lost their third straight. Nenad Krstic scored 18 points and Jefferson had 16. Jason Kidd contributed eight points and 14 assists.
"That has been our season to this point. We can't build or hold a lead in the second half," Kidd said. "We can't get stops, it's the fourth quarter. They were making baskets, we didn't put up a fight and missed some baskets and they got a lead. You have to fight through it. There's going to be some tough times this season like this...it's going to be trying for us."
New Jersey went on a 14-2 run midway through the first capped by a Krstic hook shot with 4:23 left, and led 30-20 heading into the second.
The Nets added three points to their lead in the second for a 57-44 halftime advantage.
The Blazers opened the third on an 11-2 spurt capped by an Aldridge dunk with 8:07 to go for a 59-55 deficit. They trailed 75-69 heading into the fourth, in which they outscored New Jersey by nine points for the win.
This was the second and final meeting of the season between the clubs. On Saturday, Randolph had 20 points and 16 rebounds as Portland dominated defensively to pound New Jersey, 86-68, at Continental Airlines Arena...Portland has won four of the last five contests in this series. New Jersey has lost four straight and 10 of its last 11 at Portland.
