Final Score: San Antonio 105, Memphis 98
San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Tim Duncan scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs held off the Memphis Grizzlies, 105-98, in a surprisingly hard-fought matchup between the best and worst teams in the Western Conference.
Michael Finley scored 20 points off of the bench for the Spurs, who won their fifth straight, and their ninth out of ten. Tony Parker scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists on the night. Bruce Bowen scored 13 points for San Antonio, and Manu Ginobli had 12 points and seven assists.
Mike Miller led the Grizzlies with 22 points and eight rebounds. Pau Gasol scored 16 points for Memphis, which fell for the seventh time in eight games. Chucky Atkins and Hakim Warrick added 11 points each off of the bench.
The Grizzlies trailed by as many as 19 in the third quarter, but came charging back to tie the game, and hung tight until the Spurs clamped down on defense in the final minutes.
"The key to a loss like tonight is to gain a stronger mentality, a winning mentality," said Gasol.
Miller hit two free throws to pull Memphis to within 97-96 with 2:57 left in regulation, but the Grizzlies could only hit one more field goal the rest of the way, and the Spurs closed the game out on an 8-2 run.
A three-point play by Francisco Elson put San Antonio up 65-46 in the first minute of the third quarter, but Memphis responded with 10 straight points, powered by back-to-back threes from Miller to bring the Grizzlies to within 65-56.
Another Miller three later in the quarter tied the game at 71-71, but that was quickly answered with a 10-0 Spurs run to take an 81-71 lead with 1:20 left, and San Antonio led 82-76 going into the fourth quarter.
"That third quarter we really let them back into the game, but found a way to kind of sustain and give ourselves a chance down the stretch," said Duncan.
The Grizzlies hung tight in the first quarter, and an Atkins jumper with 40 seconds left brought Memphis to within 24-22 entering the second quarter.
The Spurs outscored the Grizzlies 38-24 in the second quarter, and took a 62-46 lead into halftime.
