NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Chicago

(Tuesday, January 23rd)

Final Score: Chicago 94, Atlanta 86

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Luol Deng led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points, as the Chicago Bulls held off the Atlanta Hawks, posting a 94-86 victory at the United Center.

Six players finished in double figures for Chicago, which ended a two-game slide. P.J. Brown had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Andres Nocioni came off the bench to chip in 14 and add five boards. Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon donated 12 apiece, while Ben Wallace netted 11 on the night. Hinrich also had 12 assists, as the Bulls beat the Hawks for a ninth straight time.

Joe Johnson scored a game-high 29 points for Atlanta, which has lost three straight. Marvin Williams had 22 points, while Josh Smith contributed 16 points and six rebounds in a losing cause.

The game looked to be tight early on, as neither side led by more than two points in the opening five minutes. Brown's turnaround jumper, however, keyed a short spurt for the Bulls, who held a 16-12 advantage at 5:25.

The Hawks kept pace until Nocioni's jump shot opened a 25-20 Chicago lead at 1:35. The basket was followed by a pair of free throws from the 6-foot-7 forward, and the Bulls held a 27-20 edge heading into the second stanza.

Chicago's widest margin in the second quarter was just six points, as Tyrus Thomas hit one of two from the charity stripe to make it 30-24 at 7:43. Both teams then traded shots down the stretch, as the Bulls went into the break with a 41-37 lead.

The Bulls started to pull away in the third quarter, as Gordon's technical free throw keyed an 8-3 run, giving Chicago a 62-51 lead at 4:03.

Atlanta tried to chip away at the deficit, but made just three shots from the paint over the final three minutes of the stanza. Deng, meanwhile, continued his hot shooting at the other end. His reverse layup was followed by a pair from the charity stripe to put the Bulls up by 11. The team then coasted into the fourth quarter with a 70-59 edge.

The Hawks never seriously threatened in the fourth, as they trailed by 14 points with just 3:38 remaining.

Smith and Johnson combined for the next six points for Atlanta, but Thomas' bank shot was followed by two more Deng free throws at the other end and the Bulls led 94-81 at 1:23.

A short rally at the end proved fruitless, as the Hawks put the last five points on the board, capped by Stanislav Medvedenko's trey with just six seconds remaining in the contest.
