NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Utah

(Monday, November 6th)

Final Score: Utah 103, Detroit 101

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Mehmet Okur scored 23 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked Richard Hamilton's last-second layup attempt, as the Utah Jazz held off the Detroit Pistons, 103-101, at the Delta Center.

Carlos Boozer poured in 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting and also had 11 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the year for the Jazz, who are 4-0 for the second time in three seasons.

Deron Williams added 14 points and had seven assists while Gordan Giricek netted 13 points and Derek Fisher scored 12 for the Jazz.

Rasheed Wallace led the Pistons with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Ronald Murray came off the bench to add 15 points.

Detroit's loss came after two straight victories, including a win over the Memphis Grizzlies at the Palace on Saturday.

After a third quarter that saw the Jazz jump out to 10-point lead, the Pistons closed the gap in the final period of play.

The turning point came with 2:36 left on the clock. Detroit had taken a 96-95 lead on a slam rebound by Antonio McDyess. Okur came back to hit a basket and was fouled by Wallace, leading Detroit to call a timeout. At that point, Pistons assistant coach Dave Cowens drew a technical foul.

When play resumed Fisher hit the free throw and Okur finished a three-point play. Williams also added a shot to put the Jazz up 101-96.

The Pistons answered with Chauncey Billups hitting two from the stripe and Wallace dishing to Tayshaun Prince for a layup, but Okur added two free throws with 33 ticks remaining to make it a three-point game.

Detroit made one final attempt to pull even, as Billiups went to the line and dropped the first shot before missing the next. As the Jazz moved back down the floor, Williams missed a jumper with seven seconds left. He grabbed his own rebound, but then turned the ball over, as Billups' steal led to Hamilton's shot being blocked by Kirilenko.

The contest features seven lead changes and 12 ties.

From the opening tip, the first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the Jazz finally going on a short burst with just under four minutes remaining. Giricek nailed a jump shot, then Fisher and Kirilenko followed with consecutive layups before Kirilenko missed a free throw. With Detroit failing consistently at the other end, Boozer and Fisher drained shots, as the Jazz went on a 10-0 run to jump out in front 24-16 with 1:18 remaining and ending the frame with a 27-22 advantage.

Utah maintained its lead in the second and went into the half up 56-54. Billings' driving layup evened things at 54, but Kirilenko hit two from the charity stripe to put Utah back in front heading into the locker room.

The Jazz were ahead 81-71 going into the fourth.
