NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Boston

(Wednesday, December 6th)

Final Score: Memphis 98, Boston 96

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay hit the game-winning jump shot with 2.6 seconds on the clock, as the Memphis Grizzlies edged the Boston Celtics, 98-96, at TD Banknorth Garden.

Sparked by a pair of Gerald Green free throws with 3:05 remaining, Boston went on a 14-0 run down the stretch and Delonte West tied it at 94 on an acrobatic three-point play with 40.4 seconds left.

Chucky Atkins hit a jumper with 20.3 seconds left to finally curtail the Boston surge and put Memphis ahead by two. Damon Stoudamire fouled Paul Pierce with 6.7 seconds left, and he converted both free throws to tie the game at 96.

Gay then took a pass from Mike Miller and nailed a jumper from the foul line that bounced off the front of the rim and the backboard with 2.6 seconds on the clock to put the Grizzlies back up by two. Sebastian Telfair missed a desperation heave just before the buzzer to preserve the win for Memphis.

"It wasn't just me," Gay said. "My teammates put me in good situations. Mike [Miller] drew the defense and I just went to the right spot and hit the open shot. I didn't think about what time (was remaining). I just wanted to help my team win."

Atkins scored 19 points and dished six assists for the Grizzlies, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Dahntay Jones and Lawrence Roberts both scored 18 points, and Hakim Warrick and Miller added 12 points apiece.

Pierce poured in 25 points for the Celtics, who lost their fourth straight. Green netted 21 points off the bench. Ryan Gomes and West added 12 points apiece. Al Jefferson had nine points and 12 boards.

"Gerald (Green) has clearly earned the minutes," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "He's going to have to play more. He's making shots."

Boston played without center Kendrick Perkins, who was sidelined with plantar fasciitis and forward Wally Szczerbiak, who has a sprained left ankle.

The Celtics jumped out to an early 28-19 lead heading into the second. Brian Scalabrine's three-pointer with 9:24 left in the second capped a 15-3 run to make the score 36-21 in favor of Boston.

Memphis closed the second quarter on a 17-6 run to take a 46-44 lead at halftime. Memphis then outscored Boston by six in the third before Boston outscored Memphis by six in the fourth.

Game Notes

The Grizzlies have lost six of the 11 meetings at Boston, which leads the overall series by a 12-10 margin.
