NBA Game Summary - Memphis at New York
(Monday, December 4th)
Final Score: New York 98, Memphis 90
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Eddy Curry had 26 points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks to a rare win at Madison Square Garden, 98-90, over the Memphis Grizzlies.
David Lee added 20 points and 11 boards for New York, which won for just the second time in nine home games. Quentin Richardson also had 20 points for the Knicks, who ended a two-game slide and won for just the third time in 10 outings.
"He's playing great basketball," said Stephon Marbury of Curry. "He is a nice zone. The most important part is we're going to him. We're going to him a lot and he's been very effective."
Hakim Warrick had 19 points and seven boards to lead the Grizzlies, who fell for the third straight time. Stromile Swift added 14 points and Mike Miller tallied 13 points, seven assists and six boards for Memphis, which never led in the contest and lost for the ninth time in 10 road games.
The Knicks carried a 25-19 lead after one quarter and extended their cushion in the second stanza. New York opened the second with a 10-4 surge to forge ahead by 12 points, 35-23, after a Lee basket three minutes into action.
The lead later ballooned to 17 points, 46-29, following a Marbury bucket with five minutes to play and cruised into halftime with a 55-46 advantage.
Memphis failed to make a run in the third quarter, falling behind by as many as 16 points, 79-63, after a Malik Rose bucket with under two minutes to play.
The Grizzlies, though, did make it interesting in the final minutes of the fourth. Down by 14 points, 86-72, four minutes into the final quarter, Memphis scored seven of the next nine points to draw within nine points, 88-79, with 6 1/2 minutes to play.
Later, a pair Swift free throws made it a five-point contest, 93-88, with three minutes to go. However, that was as close as it got. Richardson hit a key turn-around jumper with 1 1/2 minutes to play to extend the lead to seven points, and the Knicks hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
"We broke down and didn't run what we were supposed to run," said Memphis head coach Mike Fratello. "It's disappointing when you work that hard, come back from 17 down, get it to five and don't go back to what got you a basket a play before."
Marbury ended with 16 points and six assists for New York, which swept the season series from Memphis.
Chucky Atkins had nine points with a season-high 11 assists for the Grizzlies, who dropped a three-OT thriller to the Knicks in Memphis back on November 1 in the season opener for both clubs, 118-117.
