Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Elton Brand scored 28 points, as the Los Angeles Clippers topped the defending champion Miami Heat, 110-95, at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Chris Kaman matched a season-high with 20 points for the Clippers, who have won four of their last five. Corey Maggette posted 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Quinton Ross had 13 points. Shaun Livingston and Daniel Ewing both added 12 points.
Jason Kapono scored 19 points for the Heat, who lost their fourth straight. Alonzo Mourning and Robert Hite both scored 16 points. Jason Williams added 13 points and five assists.
There was big news for the Heat earlier Wednesday. Head coach Pat Riley has taken a leave of absence from the team, effective immediately. Riley is going to have surgery on his right knee and hip. Assistant Ron Rothstein took over on the bench for Riley.
Both teams scored 29 points in the first, but the Clippers went on a 14-2 run midway through the second capped by a Maggette free throw with 2:48 remaining and LA held a 10-point lead at halftime.
The Clippers blew the game open in the third, outscoring the Heat 30-13 to lead 91-64 heading into the final stanza.
Miami started to rally by going on a 13-2 spurt capped by a Hite layup with 7:10 remaining. However, its early deficit was too large to overcome.
The Clippers have won three of four and four of the last six meetings, and snapped a three-game losing streak at AmericanAirlines Arena.
