NBA Game Summary - New Jersey at Utah

(Monday, January 23rd)

Final Score: Utah 89, New Jersey 78

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Andrei Kirilenko scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz over the New Jersey Nets, 89-78, at the Delta Center.

Mehmet Okur added 18 points and 13 boards for the Jazz, who ended a two-game slide and won for just the second time in six games. Gordan Giricek ended with 14 points and Devin Brown tallied 13 points for Utah, which used a strong first quarter to build a lead and never looked back.

Richard Jefferson ended with 32 points for the Nets, who didn't even score enough points to beat Kobe Bryant's historic 81-point effort on Sunday. Jason Kidd added 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for New Jersey, which lost for the second time in three outings.

After New Jersey drew within 63-56 early in the fourth quarter, Utah answered with a 15-4 run to put the game well out of reach. Kirilenko started the burst with a bucket and Devin Brown ended it with six straight points to give the Jazz a comfortable 78-60 cushion with six minutes left in the contest.

Utah cruised from there, defeating the Nets for the first time since December 1, 2003. New Jersey had won five straight against the Jazz, including the first meeting of the season between these two clubs, 91-83, at the Meadowlands.

With New Jersey leading 12-10 late in the first quarter, Utah went on a 12-2 run to end the stanza and take a 22-14 advantage into the second.

The Jazz continued to add to its cushion in the second and carried a 40-28 lead into the break. The club held the Nets at bay throughout the third, as well, leading by as many as 19 points, 58-39, on a Kirilenko bucket near the 4 1/2 minute mark.

New Jersey's Vince Carter was held to just five points on 2-of-14 shooting.
