NBA Game Summary - New Jersey at New York

(Monday, December 26th)

Final Score: New Jersey 109, New York 101

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Vince Carter scored 27 points and Richard Jefferson added 23 to lead the New Jersey Nets over the New York Knicks, 109-101, at Madison Square Garden.

Clifford Robinson added 16 points and Nenad Krstic had 12 points for New Jersey, which led the entire game for its sixth straight win overall.

Nate Robinson sparked a fourth-quarter comeback attempt for New York, scoring 13 of his career-high 21 points in the stanza, but it wasn't enough as the Knicks have lost eight of nine.

Stephon Marbury, who continues to hear boos, scored 21 for New York, which has not won back-to-back games since November 13-14 and fell to 2-10 in December. The team ended a seven-game slide on Friday night with a win at home against Utah.

The Nets scored 12 of the first 16 points of the game and never looked back. A Kidd bucket late in the first quarter extended New Jersey's led to 24-14. Then a pair of Carter free throws with under 30 seconds left in the first quarter allowed the Nets to go ahead by 12 points heading into the second.

New Jersey continued to keep the Knicks at bay the entire second quarter. The closest New York drew in the second was eight, 53-45, after a Malik Rose free throw with under three minutes on the clock. However, New Jersey responded by scoring 10 of the final 15 points of the half to take a 63-50 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter was much of the same. The Knicks got within 70-61 on a Marbury three-pointer 4:50 into the stanza, but New Jersey wouldn't let its cross-river rivals get any closer until late in the fourth quarter.

New Jersey increased the lead to 93-75 heading into the final 12 minutes.

New York showed a little spark in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 103-96 with under five minutes left, but the Nets replied with six straight points and held on for the win.

"I felt in my heart that we could win," said Robinson of the comeback. "I could then see it in the (other guys) and we started to get closer."

The Nets have won 16 of the last 19 regular-season games against New York.

"It was a good win," said Jefferson. "We struggled a little bit when we got the lead. We were able to withstand their run and we were okay."
