NBA Game Summary - Washington at Denver

(Wednesday, December 21st)

Final Score: Washington 116, Denver 110

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Gilbert Arenas scored 36 points and handed out a season-high 11 assists as the Washington Wizards defeated the Denver Nuggets, 116-110, at the Pepsi Center.

Antawn Jamison had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Brendan Haywood added 14 on 6-of-9 shooting for the Wizards, who stopped their three- game losing streak.

"As much as we talk about defense and getting stops, you have to score and not turn the ball over," said Wizards coach Eddie Jordan.

Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points and Marcus Camby added 23 and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight games.

The Wizards were up 84-74 with 1:15 left in the third quarter when the Nuggets went on a 14-2 run to take the lead at 88-86. The run was highlighted by Earl Watson, who scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter.

However, the Wizards came right back and went on an 8-2 spurt to regain the lead, 94-90, with Arenas hitting back-to-back jumpers and Jared Jeffries scoring three of his 10 points.

With 3:48 left in the game and Washington up 100-96, Jamison hit a turnaround fadeaway jumper and got fouled before making the free throw to extend the lead to 103-96. Denver never got any closer than six points the rest of the game.

With the score tied 8-8 in the first quarter, the Wizards reeled off six straight points and took the lead on an Arenas layup.

In the second quarter, Washington opened up with an 8-2 run and extended the lead to 35-27 on an Arenas layup to open the quarter.

The Nuggets later tied the game at 37-37 on a 10-2 run capped off by a Camby jumper, and Denver led at the half, 54-52.

"We didn't play aggressive enough and we didn't play smart enough to win," said Nuggets coach George Karl.
