NBA Game Summary - Houston at Memphis

Final Score: Memphis 86, Houston 81

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Shane Battier scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead Memphis to an 86-81 victory over slumping Houston at FedEx Forum.

Eddie Jones added 17 points and Damon Stoudamire had 15 to help the Grizzlies overcome an early 11-point deficit and a halt a two-game slide.

The Rockets were again without All-Star Tracy McGrady and again struggled as a result. Jon Barry led Houston, which dropped its sixth in a row, with 16 points off the bench, while Yao Ming compiled 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

McGrady sat out his fourth consecutive contest with a strained back. Houston is 0-7 without him in the lineup this season.

With Houston up 66-64 and under seven minutes to play, Battier scored on three consecutive Memphis possessions to put the hosts in front. He tied it with a short hook with 6:41 to go before making back-to-back jumpers off Stoudamire feeds a minute later.

The Rockets would battle back and drew even when Yao sank two foul shots with 3:44 to go, but Jones drained a three-pointer on the next trip down the court for a 77-74 edge. Jones then stole the ball away from Derek Anderson, and the turnover led to Pau Gasol's putback which extended the margin to five.

After Yao scored down low, Bobby Jackson hit a three for Memphis, staking the Grizzlies to an 80-74 lead with two minutes to go.

Houston would make one last surge and got within 84-81 on Luther Head's three- pointer in the closing seconds, but Stoudamire made two foul shots to help seal the win.

The Rockets began the game on an 11-0 run but were outscored 16-5 over the next five-plus minutes. Memphis would end up grabbing a 22-20 lead after one quarter on Jackson's jumper with eight seconds left.

Jackson began the second period with a three-pointer and the Grizzlies later went up 31-25 on Dahntay Jones' two free throws three minutes into the quarter. Houston would again battle back and sent the game into the break tied at 37-37 when Juwan Howard beat the buzzer with a short jumper.

The game remained tight throughout the third quarter, with Memphis clinging to a 60-59 lead at period's end. However, Yao would begin the fourth with a jumper and Stromile Swift followed with a three-point play to put the Rockets up by four.

Game Notes

Houston shot 47 percent (8-of-17) from three-point range while Memphis was 7- of-23 from beyond the arc...Gasol finished with just nine points, 10 under his season average, but contributed eight assists...Houston fell to 2-6 on the road this season...Memphis committed just 12 turnovers and owned a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint.
