(Friday, February 10th)
Final Score: Detroit 84, Orlando 73
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Rasheed Wallace scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Detroit Pistons over the Orlando Magic, 84-73, at TD Waterhouse Centre.
Richard Hamilton added 23 points for the Pistons, who have won two straight after dropping consecutive games for the first time this season. Chauncey Billups had 11 points and 14 assists as Detroit shot 40.5 percent from the field, but went a blistering 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the three-point line. The trio of Wallace, Hamilton and Billups went a combined 9-of-19 from beyond the arc.
"It was a good win for us," said Billups. "I thought we played pretty good. We tightened up out defense when we needed to. It was a good win and it was good to get back to playing the way that we play."
Dwight Howard had 19 points, 17 boards and three blocks for the Magic, who have dropped three straight and seven of eight. Hedo Turkoglu added 17 points for Orlando, which shot 45.6 percent from the floor for the contest but the team managed just 68 shots compared to Detroit's 84.
"We hold then to 40 percent from the floor, they shoot nine free throws but we turn it over 17 times," said Orlando head coach Brian Hill. "We need to shoot a higher percentage and get to the line more."
After the Magic kept the game close for a little more than two quarters, the Pistons began to build a lead midway through the third. With Detroit leading 45-41, Ben Wallace's follow-up dunk of a Tayshaun Prince miss began a 7-0 surge that gave Detroit a double-digit advantage. Hamilton's basket at the 7:00 mark capped the run, giving the club a 52-41 cushion and the club cruised into the fourth with a 62-54 advantage.
The Pistons continued to pour it on to start the final 12 minutes, scoring the first 10 points of the frame to take a comfortable lead and put the game out of reach. Rasheed Wallace scored the final five points of the burst, ending it with a three-pointer 3:31 into the frame for a 72-54 advantage.
Orlando never threatened after that, drawing only within 81-71 with just over a minute to play.
The Magic, who didn't score more than 19 points in any quarter, trailed 20-18 after one and 38-37 at halftime.
DeShawn Stevenson had 10 points and Steve Francis was held to nine points for the Magic...Orlando fell to 13-12 at home and 1-9 against the Central Division...Ben Wallace ended with five points and 10 boards...Detroit improved to 19-6 on the road.
