NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Dallas
(Saturday, November 19th)
Final Score: Dallas 119, Detroit 82
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Josh Howard had 26 points and eight rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks handed the Detroit Pistons their first loss of the season, a 119-82 drubbing at American Airlines Center.
Dirk Nowitzki added 23 points and eight boards for the Mavericks, who have won five straight and recorded their most lopsided win of the year against the NBA's best squad up to this point of the year.
Erick Dampier tallied 16 points and 14 boards and Marquis Daniels recorded 15 points and six assists for Dallas, which ran out to a 24-point lead after one quarter and cruised the rest of the way.
Richard Hamilton had 18 points to lead the Pistons, who came into the game 8-0 and off to their best start since the 1988-89 campaign when they also captured eight straight to start the year. Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace added 12 points apiece for the Detroit, which failed to match the best start in club history at 9-0 set by the 1970-71 club.
"They kicked our butt," said Flip Saunders, who suffered his first loss as head coach of the Pistons. "Every which way you could get beat we got beat."
Dallas had control of this game from the outset. Detroit had one lead in the contest and that came after Billups hit 1-of-2 free throws just seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead.
The Mavs opened up a 13-3 lead following a Dampier bucket just over four minutes into the contest. That cushion exploded to 27-10 after a Howard basket with 3 1/2 left in the first and continued to increase to 40-16 going into the second.
"Tonight we got off to a good start," said Dallas head coach Avery Johnson. Throughout the whole game we had a consistency which we hadn't had but maybe one game this year."
Things didn't get any better for the Pistons in the second as Dallas went ahead by as many as 26 points at 44-18. Detroit drew within 54-37 after a brief 7-0 spurt, but that would be just about the only highlight for the defending Eastern Conference champions as Dallas led 58-37 going into halftime.
The third quarter was much of the same with the lead shrinking to 70-52 five minutes into the stanza. However, Dallas went into the fourth with a commanding 90-62 cushion.
The lead ballooned to 30 points for the first time in the final quarter when Daniels opened the stanza with a bucket. The Pistons never got within spitting distance of the Mavs the rest of the way.
