NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Phoenix

(Wednesday, February 8th)

Final Score: Phoenix 108, Memphis 102

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Shawn Marion recorded 21 points and pulled down 16 boards before fouling out with 7.7 seconds remaining to lead Phoenix to a 108-102 win over Memphis at US Airways Center.

"Man, it was a rough finish but we came out and pulled out the win in the end," said Marion. "We made a couple of adjustments in the second half and we played well enough throughout the entire game to come out with a win."

The league's reigning MVP, Steve Nash, hit three key free throws down the stretch and also contributed a double-double for the Suns, who have won four of their last five games. Nash finished with 14 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds on the night.

Leandro Barbosa added a season-high 24 points off the bench while Boris Diaw had 18 points and James Jones had 16 in the win.

"I thought we did a great job," said Barbosa. "We were running the floor and that's what coach was looking for tonight. I thought we did a great job on their shooters and that helped us get the win."

Bobby Jackson netted 17 points for the Grizzlies, who lost their fourth straight outing. Eddie Jones added 16 points while Pau Gasol had 15 points and Antonio Burks had 12 in the loss.

"I thought the guys did a terrific job of fighting back and being more representative of what we're about," said Memphis coach Mike Fratello. "They played hard, they scrambled, forced some turnovers, made some shots. It was good to see they fought back."

The Suns had a comfortable 16-point cushion, 91-75, entering the final frame but failed to put Memphis away.

A furious late game push put the game in doubt. Burks buried back-to-back jumpers to slice the Phoenix lead to seven, 103-96, with just 1:37 remaining.

Barbosa's driving layup 20 seconds later stemmed the tide but Burks struck again.

The second-year guard hit another jumper and followed that with a triple to make the score 105-101 with 37 ticks left.

Nash then hit on 3-of-4 free throws in the final seconds to secure things for Phoenix.

"We had a great first half and a super second quarter," said Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni. "Then we just kind of held on. It is expected in the middle of the season to have our ups and downs."

Phoenix took a slim 22-21 advantage after the first 12 minutes, but blew open the game open with a 42-point second quarter and took a 18-point edge at intermission, 64-46.
