Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Elton Brand scored 23 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, as the Clippers continued their best start in franchise history with more success against their Los Angeles rivals with a 97-91 triumph over the Lakers at the Staples Center.
Corey Maggette added 21 points and Cuttino Mobley scored 20 for the Clippers, who led wire-to-wire and won for the fourth time in five contests to move to 7-2 on the season.
"We did the job we wanted to do," Maggette said. "We just had too much firepower, a good team effort tonight. We wanted this one."
The Clippers have won three straight over their city rivals. However, it marked just the third time the Clippers beat the Lakers as the visiting team.

The Clippers were in front by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and held a 74-65 advantage going into the fourth. The Clippers scored the first five points of the fourth and the Lakers could get no closer than five points in the final stanza.
Bryant hit two free throws with 58.7 seconds left to draw his team within 93-88, but Odom then fouled Brand at midcourt on a controversial call. Odom blanketed Brand, who was falling over the midcourt line for a supposed violation.

Bryant was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all of his foul shots with 35.1 seconds left, but Sam Cassell hit one free throw with 20.9 seconds left for the final margin.
The Lakers, who trailed 53-45 at the half, shot just 2-of-14 from three-point range and ended the game 38.8 percent overall from the field.
