NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Cleveland
(Tuesday, December 13th)
Final Score: Atlanta 100, Cleveland 94
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Al Harrington scored 20 points and Tyronn Lue added a season-high 19, as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 100-94, at Quicken Loans Arena.
Joe Johnson contributed 18 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks, who have won two straight games following a seven-game losing streak. Atlanta, which defeated the Spurs on December 11, also posted back-to-back wins for just the second time in its last 102 games.
"It's a carry over from the last game," said Johnson. "We felt that if we could beat the Spurs, we could beat just about anybody in the league. Guys came out with a certain attitude tonight and all I know is that everybody had a different demeanor about themselves. Everybody kind of had a little swagger and we came out and played hard."
In addition, the Hawks put an end to a seven-game losing streak to Cleveland.
LeBron James poured in a game-high 39 points while grabbing 10 boards and dishing out six assists for Cleveland, which has dropped three straight games. Larry Hughes added 16 points in the loss.
James has now scored at least 30 points in six straight games, extending his own team record.
"I can't feel down," said James. "I don't want to feel down. It is too early in the season for me to get down. Especially with me being the leader of this team and I can't get down because it will rub off on everyone else. I'm high in spirit right now. That's one thing I can't do is get low in spirit."
Leading by 10 points after three quarters, Atlanta extended its edge early in the period. Harrington hit one free throw with just over six minutes remaining to extend the lead to 13 points.
The Cavaliers did pull within 87-79 on James' layup with 2:29 left in the game and closed the gap to five points on three occasions. However, Atlanta would not let the game get any closer than five, as it converted nine of its last 10 foul shots down the stretch.
The Hawks scored their final 14 points from the foul line and were 14-of-18 from the charity stripe in the final period.
Atlanta used an early 13-0 run and led by as many as nine points in the first quarter before eventually holding a 25-19 edge after one period.
In the second, Zaza Pachulia's free throw with 7:45 remaining in the quarter stretched the Hawks lead to 37-24, but Cleveland fought back and closed within six points later in the frame. Atlanta eventually led 48-41 at halftime.
Harrington scored 10 points in the opening 24 minutes, while James paced the Cavs with 20 first-half points.
