The Spurs led 74-72 on Horry's bucket with 4:48 remaining in the contest, their first lead since the 2:41 mark in the first quarter, but Phoenix used a 12-3 spurt to take the lead for good. Nash highlighted the run with a pair of Nash threes, Phoenix's only two of the night.
San Antonio would pull within two with under 30 seconds left in the game on Nick Van Exel's jumper, but the Suns put the game away at the line, hitting 5- of-8 in the last minute.
"Our defense was great all night," said Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni. "We had to get on track because they (Spurs) play great defense. They did a great job on our three-point shooting. I didn't think it was as pretty as last night but in another sense our basketball was good. When we win one when we aren't clicking that much on offense, which wasn't the case last year, it is a good sign."
San Antonio jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Parker's driving layup. However, the Suns countered with nine straight points, capped by a pair of Kurt Thomas free throws.
The Spurs were down by one toward the end of the first quarter, but Diaw was fouled on his three-point attempt and connected on all three free throws to give Phoenix a 24-20 lead after 12 minutes of play.
In the second period, San Antonio tied the Suns on Parker's jumper with 1:02 remaining in the half, however, moments later Diaw's hot hand continued and he buried a bucket to give Phoenix a 42-40 lead after two quarters.
Duncan's hook with 4:35 left in the third stanza tied the game at 53-53, but Phoenix went on a 10-4 spurt, finished off with a pair of Raja Bell free throws. Bell's layup with 24 seconds left gave the Suns a 65-60 lead heading into the fourth frame.
