NBA Game Summary - Phoenix at LA Clippers

(Saturday, December 10th)

Final Score: LA Clippers 101, Phoenix 91

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Elton Brand led a balanced Los Angeles attack with 27 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, as the Clippers beat the injury-riddled Phoenix Suns, 101-91, in a Pacific Division battle at the Staples Center.

Cuttino Mobley added 25 points and Sam Cassell scored 24 for the Clippers, who won their fourth straight contest, snapped Phoenix's nine-game winning streak and moved into first place in the division, a game ahead of the Suns.

Chris Kaman had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which broke a four- game skid against the Suns. The Clippers held Phoenix to 42 percent shooting.

"Our defense in the second half was very strong," said Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy. "We did a much better job on the boards. That's a hell of a shooting team, to hold them to 42 percent. We executed our game plan very well."

Shawn Marion poured in 20 points for Phoenix, which lost for the first time since November 19 at San Antonio. Suns guard Leandro Barbosa, in just his second game back from a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, reinjured the knee during the fourth quarter and was helped to the locker room. Forward James Jones sprained his right ankle in the first half.

"Give them credit, they played well," said Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni. "We just couldn't get it going. We had the shots to make, we just didn't make them."

Steve Nash added 16 points and 11 assists for the Suns, while Kurt Thomas totaled 13 points and 17 rebounds.

The Clippers held Phoenix scoreless for 7:50 of the fourth quarter. A Barbosa jumper pulled the Suns within 83-78 with 11:31 remaining, but Phoenix didn't score again until 3:40 remained following a jumper from Eddie House. By that time, the Clippers had built a 91-80 lead. The Suns couldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Barbosa was hurt with nearly four minutes left when he dribbled against Cassell and turned his knee as he fell to the floor in pain.

The Clippers held a 37-34 lead after one quarter before the Suns gained a 57-53 edge at the half. Los Angeles used a 14-4 spurt in the third quarter to build a 75-65 advantage. Mobley had seven points during the run.
