NBA Game Summary - Utah at Detroit
(Saturday, January 7th)
Final Score: Utah 94, Detroit 90 (OT)
Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Andrei Kirilenko equaled a season-high with 24 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists, as Utah earned a season sweep of the Detroit Pistons with a 94-90 overtime win at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The Jazz have accounted for two of Detroit's five defeats this season, holding the Pistons under 40 percent shooting both times. The Pistons (26-5) shot just 38.2 percent in a 92-78 defeat at Salt Lake City on December 12, and made 36.4 percent of its attempts on Saturday on the way to just its second defeat in 16 home games this season.
"Maybe it's we don't need extra motivation against them," Kirilenko said. "They're the best team in the league. They should lose once in a while."
Former Piston Mehmet Okur added 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Jazz, who have won six of their last seven overall. Deron Williams finished with 14 points and Matt Harpring scored 12 in the win.
Chauncey Billups had 24 points and eight assists, but failed to capitalize on a potential winning shot at the end of regulation for Detroit, which lost for just the second time in its last 13 games.
"Kirilenko is 6-11 and he's a three-man, and their twos are usually pretty big, too," Detroit head coach Flip Saunders said. "They're extremely aggressive. They spread the floor a lot."
Kirilenko's two free throws with 15.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 82. Billups then missed a scoop shot at the buzzer, forcing the overtime.
"I slipped a little and lost control," Billups said. "I just tried to make a shot and got in a little finger roll. It actually felt good, but it didn't go in."
Rasheed Wallace gave Detroit an 86-85 lead with a jumper with 2:53 left in OT, but Okur countered with a three-pointer 21 seconds later. A layup by Utah's Greg Ostertag made it 90-86 with 1:46 remaining.
The Pistons closed within two a pair of times, the last at 92-90 on Ben Wallace's bucket with under 30 seconds left. However, Milt Palacio sealed Utah's victory with a driving layup with 4.6 seconds to play.
Utah actually came back from a 14-point deficit in this game. The Jazz were behind 30-16 after one quarter and 44-36 at halftime. They were down 65-55 going into the fourth quarter, but used a 12-3 run to tie the game at 75-75 after a Williams layup with 3:34 left in the stanza.
Richard Hamilton had 18 points and eight assists for Detroit, while Tayshaun Prince had 14 points, Antonio McDyess 13 and Rasheed Wallace 11...Ben Wallace had 16 boards for Detroit.
