East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Jamal Crawford scored 23 points and dished out 11 assists, as the New York Knicks avoided 60 losses on the season after defeating the New Jersey Nets, 90-83, at Continental Airlines Arena.
Eddy Curry added 18 points for the Knicks, who snapped a five-game losing streak and avoided setting a single-season record for most defeats in a season. The Knicks finished the season at 23-59.
Knicks head coach Larry Brown returned to the bench after missing three games due to a stomach ailment, but assistant coach Herb Williams coached most of the game.
"He let me have it," said Williams. "He let me coach the game, but he was giving his input."
The win was the Knicks' first against New Jersey this season in four games and snapped a six-game overall losing streak to the Nets. New York's last win in New Jersey came on December 14, 2004.
"They didn't play a lot of players, well they played very short minutes to get ready for the playoffs," Williams said. "Jersey is going to the playoffs and we are going home for the summer."
Jacque Vaughn scored 15 points with eight assists for the Nets, who were without regulars Vince Carter, Nenad Krstic and Jason Kidd. Regular starter Richard Jefferson netted 13 points in 18-plus minutes of work for the Nets.
Zoran Planinic donated 10 points and six assists for the Nets, who closed out the season by losing four of six. However, the Nets head into the postseason as the third seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Nets will face the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the playoffs.
The Knicks enjoyed a 17-5 run for the first half of the third frame to take a 63-44 lead. The burst took up the first 6:58 of the frame and came to a close with seven straight points by the Knicks, including three straight from Crawford.
Two free throws by Crawford later gave the Knicks a 70-52 edge with two minutes remaining in the third and New York led 70-57 heading into the fourth.
The Nets got as close as five on Vaughn's layup with 3:40 to go in the fourth, but the Knicks were able to keep the Nets at arms length and pull out the victory.
New Jersey led 24-22 after the first quarter, but the Knicks closed out the second frame on a 6-0 run, with all six points coming from the free throw line, to lead 46-39 at half.
Crawford had 12 points after the first 24 minutes to lead the Knicks, while Jefferson paced the Nets with 10.
New York shot 53.2 percent from the floor to New Jersey's 39.5...Nate Robinson scored 15 points while David Lee and Maurice Taylor both netted 11 off the bench for the Knicks...Scott Padgett scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds while John Thomas pulled down 10 boards for the Nets...The Knicks finished the season 8-33 on the road while the Nets fell to 29-12 at home...New Jersey ended the regular season with a 49-33 mark, tied for the second most wins in a season in franchise history. The record is 52 games.
