NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Atlanta

(Saturday, November 12th)

Final Score: Memphis 85, Atlanta 84

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Pau Gasol collected an offensive rebound and scored the game-winning basket with a layup just before the final horn sounded, as Memphis edged winless Atlanta, 85-84, at Philips Arena.

Shane Battier ended with 22 points and eight rebounds while Gasol had 20 points and nine boards for the Grizzlies, who put an end to a two-game losing streak. Bobby Jackson netted 17 points in the win.

Joe Johnson had 17 points and a game-high 12 assists while Josh Smith went for 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who fell to 0-6 on the season.

"It hurts for it to come down to a buzzer-beater and not giving us a chance to try and tie the game up or get a win," said Smith. "We can't dwell on it. There are a lot of games in the NBA."

Atlanta is off to its worst start since 2000-01 when the Hawks began the season with seven straight losses.

Trailing by eight points after 36 minutes of play, Atlanta came back in the fourth as Marvin Williams' hoop nearly five minutes into the period trimmed the deficit to 70-69.

The Hawks then finally took the lead when Johnson drained a three-pointer with 1 1/2 minutes left to make it 82-81. The teams traded baskets over the next minute, and after a series of misses by both clubs, the Grizzlies inbounded the ball from the right side down 84-83 with 21.4 seconds to go.

Mike Miller missed a baseline jumper and the rebound got tapped back to Jackson, who also missed a shot with 11 seconds left.

Zaza Pachulia was then fouled and had a chance to extend the lead, but he missed both shots to keep it a one-point game.

After a timeout, Miller unleashed a three-pointer that was off the mark with four seconds left. However, the ball got batted around before Gasol controlled the rebound and immediately put up a shot from in close that rattled off the back rim and fell through the net as the final buzzer sounded.

"It could have gone either way for us," said Gasol. "It would have been an extremely tough loss and a really bad end to this road trip. We stayed with it and I had that tip at the end. It could have gone either way. I saw the shot clock going to zero so I knew I didn't have any time to shoot it comfortably. It was an incredible game with an incredible finish."

Memphis led 24-23 after one and carried a 43-40 edge into the locker room. The Grizzlies entered the final quarter with a 65-57 edge.
