NBA Game Summary - Houston at Miami
(Thursday, November 10th)
Final Score: Miami 88, Houston 84
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Dwyane Wade had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Miami Heat over the Houston Rockets, 88-84, at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Alonzo Mourning added 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Heat, who have won two of three to move to the .500 mark for the season at 3-3. Jason Williams also had 13 points for Miami, which gave head coach Stan Van Gundy a 3-2 lead in the coaching series against his brother Jeff.
Yao Ming had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets, who have dropped three straight after winning their season opener. Derek Anderson added 20 points, six rebounds and five assists for Houston, which has dropped three in a row in Miami with Jeff Van Gundy as head coach.
"It was a really hard fought game," said Stan Van Gundy. "We finished the game very well. That has to be the model for how to finish the game...Hopefully, we can build on this game."
The game came down to the final minutes, but was missing most of its luster as Miami's All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal and Houston's All-Star forward Tracy McGrady each missed the game due to injuries. McGrady has a back problem, while O'Neal is nursing a sprained ankle.
Miami entered the fourth quarter trailing 64-60 and found itself down eight points after the Rockets scored the first four points of the frame. Still down eight at 71-63, the Heat went on an 11-1 run to take the lead, 74-72. Williams' bucket with 6:10 remaining ended the burst, which gave Miami its first lead since midway through the third quarter.
Houston regained the lead on a Rafer Alston three-pointer with 5:40 on the clock, but a Udonis Haslem bucket 56 seconds later started a 9-2 run for the Heat. Mourning's jumper with 1:28 left ended the spurt, giving Miami an 83-77 cushion with 1:10 left.
Action tightened up in the final seconds, but Houston never had the ball with a chance to tie the game.
"One thing that was different about tonight is that we executed down the stretch," said Wade. "We did not turn the ball over like we have done in the previous games. We took care of the ball and we executed on offense. We rebounded the ball at the end of the game also."
Miami moved to 2-2 without O'Neal, while Houston fell to 0-3 without McGrady.
"You should get [effort]," said Jeff Van Gundy. "You're not paid to try hard. That should be given. We're paid to produce, all of us, myself included. We're not right now. To lose the same way three straight games should be disturbing to all of us, because it shows that either we don't believe in what we're doing, we don't thrust [each other] enough, or the plan is flawed."
The Heat led 22-20 after one quarter and extended that advantage to 48-44 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Houston went on a 7-0 run to turn a 56-54 deficit into a 61-56 lead. Anderson scored the first five points of the burst, hitting a three with 5:27 left to give the Rockets the lead, 59-56. He also ended it with a free throw with 2:46 left until the fourth.
