Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Paul Pierce shot 11-of-17 from the floor and had 31 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds as the Boston Celtics defeated the Charlotte Bobcats, 109-106, at the TD Banknorth Garden.

"We were very fortunate," said Pierce. "Obviously, there are a lot of things we have to work on. I thought we played good defense."

Charlotte countered with a 16-3 run, highlighted by a Wallace offensive rebound and layup with 6:27 remaining in the half.

Pierce scored 12 of the Celtics' final 14 points of the second stanza, as Boston held a 60-51 lead after 24 minutes of play.

The Celtics were able to extend their lead to 75-59 on Al Jefferson's layup with 7:12 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats got back in the game with a 22-6 spurt to close the third frame, capped by a pair of Bogans free throws to tie the game, 81-81.
