NBA Game Summary - Portland at LA Lakers

(Friday, April 14th)

Final Score: LA Lakers 110, Portland 99

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Kobe Bryant netted 50 points and in the process set the Lakers' franchise record for points in a season, as Los Angeles defeated the Portland Trail Blazers, 110-99, at the Staples Center.

Bryant came into the contest with 2,704 points on the season, but his 50 points helped him surpass Elgin Baylor's franchise mark of 2,719, set during the 1962-63 campaign.

"I can't take credit for what's happening out there," Bryant said. "I learned it all by watching tapes of Elgin, Oscar Robertson and all the great players. I stole everything and incorporated it into my game."

Not to be out done, Lamar Odom recorded his second straight triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for the Lakers, who have won three straight and nine of 12.

"I hope I can keep it going and take it into the playoffs," Odom said. "I'm staying focused throughout the game. I'm trying to do the little things I need to do to win games."

The Lakers, who currently sit in the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference, can clinch a playoff spot with a win Sunday against Phoenix. Los Angeles did not make the playoffs last season.

Kwame Brown added 20 points and nine boards in the win.

Martell Webster netted 18 points off the bench for the Trail Blazers, who have lost 15 games in a row on the road and five in a row overall. Sebastian Telfair added 15 points and seven assists for Portland.

The Trail Blazers were without Darius Miles after the enigmatic forward was apparently asked to leave the team and return to Portland. The action was taken after Miles removed his uniform and changed into his street clothes at halftime of team's game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

The Lakers doubled up Portland in the opening frame and led by 36-18 after the quarter.

Down 10-4, a dunk by Brown sparked a 14-0 run that put the Lakers ahead 18-10 after a Luke Walton jumper with 4:45 to play in the first. Los Angeles later netted the last 10 points of the frame en route to its 18-point edge.

Portland, though, outscored the Lakers 27-14 in the second to close to within 50-45.

Down 44-23, the Trail Blazers exploded with a 12-0 run that was capped after a Juan Dixon jumper with 4:36 remaining to make it a 44-35 contest as Portland got back into the game.

Nothing was settled in the third quarter with both teams netting 29 points and the Lakers carrying a 79-74 lead into the fourth.

The Lakers created separation late in the fourth. Ahead by six at 96-90 after a jumper by Portland's Viktor Khryapa with 4:34 to play, the Lakers went off from the free throw line.

Bryant and Brown combined to go 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to make it a 103-90 contest with 2:49 to go. Bryant later hit a jumper with 1:54 left to give him 50 points and make the score 105-92.

It was Bryant's sixth 50-plus point performance of the season and 11th of his career.
