NBA Game Summary - New Orleans/Oklahoma City at Dallas
(Saturday, December 3rd)
Final Score: Dallas 97, New Orleans/Oklahoma City 88
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki had a game-high 30 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Dallas Mavericks over the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, 97-88, at American Airlines Center.
Jason Terry added 20 points and Marquis Daniels had 13 along with five assists for the Mavericks, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Chris Paul had 25 points, six rebounds and five assists while Speedy Claxton added 21 points and five rebounds for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak stopped.
The Hornets, who trailed the entire game, pulled to within three points when Paul hit a driving layup to make it 78-75 with 8:24 left. But Nowitzki would get 10 points during a 14-5 run, which was capped off when he hit a jumper to make it 92-80 with 2:39 to play.
Dallas would take a 17-point lead after Nowitzki hit two free throws with 1:29 to play. New Orleans/Oklahoma City scored the last eight points of the game, but could get no closer.
Nowitzki scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half.
"He was aggressive and when he is aggressive and mixing his game up they don't play him for one particular area of his game," said Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. "He showed his post-up game, his driving and three-point ability, his in-between game and mixed in one offensive rebound."
The Mavericks got the first 12 points of the game and had a 23-15 lead after the first 12 minutes. The Hornets missed their first five baskets and shot 5- for-14 in the quarter.
"We got off to a very sluggish start for whatever reason," said Hornets coach Byron Scott. "We knew they were going to be ready tonight after losing two in a row. After an emotional game last night, I knew our guys were going to be a little drained, but again, no excuses we could have come out and played a little better in the first quarter."
Claxton made it a five-point game when his layup with a little over eight minutes left in the half made it 29-24. However, that was as close as New Orleans/Oklahoma City would get before the break, as Dallas took a 49-40 lead into the locker room.
Claxton led all scorers at the half with 17 points.
The Hornets started out the third quarter with a 10-2 run and pulled to within one point when Paul hit a jump shot 2:10 in to make it 51-50. But the Mavericks would score the next nine points and never led by less than three over the remainder of the game.
