NBA Game Summary - Minnesota at LA Clippers
(Saturday, November 5th)
Final Score: LA Clippers 100, Minnesota 99 (OT)
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Cuttino Mobley scored 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, as the Los Angeles Clippers moved to their best start in 20 years with a 100-99 overtime win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Clippers survived a last-second attempt by Kevin Garnett to move to 3-0 for the first time since the 1985-86 season, when they won their first five contests.
"The guys played their hearts out," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We needed a defensive stop and we got it."
Elton Brand also had 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Clippers, while Chris Kaman and Sam Cassell each scored 12. Los Angeles, which toppled Seattle Wednesday and beat Atlanta Friday, got past Minnesota for just the second time in the last 12 meetings.
"We were poised at the end," Brand said. "It was a big statement for us to win in overtime. We pulled it out tonight."
Garnett had 25 points and 15 rebounds, but his shot over Zeljko Rebraca rolled on the left side of the rim and then off the right side as time expired, giving the Timberwolves their second straight overtime defeat. Troy Hudson added 21 points for Minnesota, which fell 107-102 at Seattle Friday night.
Garnett's short jumper from the left side over Brand with 7.3 seconds left in regulation forced overtime. Cassell had a shot to give the Clippers the victory at the end of regulation, but his scoop shot was off the mark.
A layup by Marko Jaric boosted the Timberwolves to their first and only lead of the game, 97-95, with 2:01 left in OT. However, Mobley's dunk 15 seconds later tied the game and Quinton Ross' jump shot with 1:26 remaining made it 99-97.
Mobley hit one free throw with 41 seconds left to extend LA's lead, but Hudson's layup with 33 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 100-99.
Mobley missed a jumper to set up Minnesota's final opportunity, but the Timberwolves couldn't capitalize. However, the Timberwolves will have an opportunity for revenge, as they host the Clippers Monday night.
The Clippers led by as many as 11 points in the contest. They were up 26-20 after the first quarter, 49-44 at the half, and 76-67 after three quarters.
Brand fell one rebound shy of a double-double. He has 180 double-doubles of points/rebounds in a Clippers uniform, one shy of the franchise record held by Loy Vaught (181)...Jaric had eight points and eight assists...Ross scored 10 points...Michael Olowokandi had 13 points and Anthony Carter had 11 for Minnesota, which shot 45.8 percent from the field...Cassell was 5-of-19 from the floor, as the Clippers shot 43.8 percent...Mobley was 4-of-7 on three- pointers.
