NBA Game Summary - Minnesota at Seattle
(Friday, November 4th)
Final Score: Seattle 107, Minnesota 102 (OT)
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Ray Allen scored 32 points, including 11 in overtime, as the Seattle SuperSonics defeated Minnesota 107-102 at KeyArena.
Allen also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists for the Sonics, who recorded their first win of the season. Rashard Lewis chipped in 19 points and Luke Ridnour added 10 points and nine assists in the winning effort.
Kevin Garnett scored a team-high 23 points to go with nine assists and seven boards for Minnesota, which dropped its first game of the year after winning its opener against Portland Wednesday. Marko Jaric scored 20 points, and Wally Szczerbiak donated 16.
The Sonics trailed by five entering the fourth quarter, but went on a 15-6 run to take a 90-84 lead with 5:16 remaining.
After Jaric hit a three-pointer to pull his team with three, Lewis nailed a baseline jumper despite being fouled, and made the ensuing free-throw to give Seattle a 93-89 edge with just over three minutes left on the clock.
Wally Szczerbiak tied the game on a fast-break layup with 1:02 left, as Garnett saved the ball from going out of bounds before finding the flashing Szczerbiak with a perfect outlet pass. The Timberwolves defense then stiffened in Seattle's final possession in regulation, forcing Allen to take a tough shot at the buzzer that fell short to send the game into overtime.
Allen would not be denied in OT, however, hitting three straight field goals, including back-to-back three-balls, to make it 103-98 Seattle.
"Ray is a great player, he did what he had to do, he is a big time player," said Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey.
Minnesota would cut the lead to 103-100, but Michael Olowokandi missed a point-blank layup and Seattle made its free throws to close out the game.
Lewis' slam with 9:59 remaining in the opening quarter gave the Sonics a 7-0 advantage to start the game.
Minnesota answered with a 24-13 run that helped capture the momentum and assume the lead after one quarter of play. Trenton Hassell finished a driving dunk to put Minnesota ahead 11-10, then added a running jumper late in the stanza to cap the spurt.
The two teams battled to a stalemate in the second quarter, and headed into halftime knotted at 47-47.
