NBA Game Summary - LA Lakers at Portland
(Wednesday, March 1)
Final Score: Portland 99, LA Lakers 93
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph scored 20 points and Steve Blake added 19 as Portland put an end to a six-game losing streak with a 99-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at the Rose Garden.
Juan Dixon contributed 12 points to the win, the Trail Blazers' first since a February 13 triumph at Charlotte and just the team's second in 12 games overall.
"We needed a win, and I think any time you beat the Lakers it's a big win," said Portland head coach Nate McMillan. "It was nice to play well in front of our fans. It wasn't a sloppy game. Tonight I think we were the aggressors."
Kobe Bryant finished with 35 points for the Lakers, who have dropped six of their last seven on the road. Lamar Odom posted 16 points and eight rebounds in defeat.
Portland trailed 21-18 after one quarter but outscored the Lakers 10-3 over the first four minutes of the second to move in front. The Trail Blazers then extended their lead over the final six minutes of the half.
Up by two midway through the second quarter, Portland embarked on a 14-4 run to build a 44-32 advantage. Sebastian Telfair had two early buckets during the spurt, which was highlighted by three-pointers from Martell Webster and Blake.
Los Angeles regrouped and pulled within 47-40 at intermission after Bryant made two free throws after drawing a foul at the buzzer. However, Portland put the Lakers further in a hole with a strong third quarter.
Randolph, who had 12 points during the frame, capped a brief 6-0 burst with a jumper that staked the Blazers to a 57-44 lead early in the period. The margin got as high as 16 points later on and Portland carried a cozy 77-63 cushion heading into the final 12 minutes.
However, the Lakers started the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to make it a five-point game and inched even closer when Smush Parker's driving layup with 1:39 remaining brought LA within 82-79.
The lead was still three points, 96-93, after Odom's reverse layup with under a minute left. The Lakers then forced Blake to misfire from the outside, but Portland's Darius Miles sealed the win by pickpocketing Parker and dunking the ball with 10 seconds to go.
"Tonight we stayed in the game," said Miles. "We didn't get down when they came back."
