Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Mike James scored a game-high 24 points off the bench as red-hot Houston overcame the absence of All-Star Tracy McGrady to beat short-handed Seattle, 106-78, in a battle of postseason teams that did not impact the playoffs.
James went 10-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point distance, for the Rockets, who are the fifth seed in the Western Conference playoffs and will visit No. 4 Dallas Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (et). The Sonics are the third seed and will host the sixth-seeded Sacramento Kings Saturday at 10:30 p.m. (et).
Bob Sura netted 18 points, Yao Ming scored 13 to go along with six rebounds and Jon Barry had 14 for Houston (51-31), which posted its seventh straight win, although McGrady missed the game due to back spasms.
The Rockets shot a sizzling 69 percent (11-of-16) from three-point distance, while Seattle hit just 2-of-18 (11 percent) from behind the arc.
Leading the SuperSonics (52-30), who played without the talents of All-Stars Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, was Ronald Murray with 22 points.
Vitaly Potapenko added 13 points and Robert Swift scored 10 for Seattle, which amassed the most victories since the 1997-98 campaign when the Sonics won 61 games.
Leading 28-24 after the first quarter, Houston outscored Seattle 28-14 in the second frame to take an 18-point cushion into intermission.
The Rockets remained hot after halftime, opening the third quarter on a 25-11 burst to take an 82-49 advantage before cruising to the victory as Seattle never mounted a comeback threat.
Seattle won the Northwest Division title...This was the fourth meeting of the season between the clubs with the Rockets winning three...The Sonics had won three in a row at Houston...Entering Wednesday's game, McGrady led the Rockets in scoring (25.7 ppg) and assists (5.7 apg), while Yao was averaging a team- best 8.4 rebounds per game...Houston finished 25-16 on the road and 26-15 as the host this season...The Rockets opened the season 6-11.
