NBA Game Summary - Portland at Sacramento

(Tuesday, March 22nd)

Final Score: Sacramento 112, Portland 93

Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Kenny Thomas had 24 points and nine rebounds and Peja Stojakovic amassed 23 points as Sacramento downed Portland, 112-93, at ARCO Arena.

Cuttino Mobley added 19 points while Mike Bibby scored 12 and dished out 10 assists to help Kings head coach Rick Adelman register his 700th career victory. Sacramento, which never trailed at any point of the contest, has now won two of its last three and remains one game in front of Houston for fifth place in the Western Conference standings.

"Each time one of those (milestones) happens you appreciate it more because you know when you look back how much effort went it," said Adelman, who started his NBA head coaching career in Portland. "I have been really blessed to be in two great situations in Portland and the last seven in Sacramento."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim netted 27 points and Damon Stoudamire recorded 25 along with 11 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who fell for the sixth straight game and 12th time in 13 outings. Joel Przybilla racked up 13 points and 21 rebounds in defeat.

"There was more energy in the game, and even though we had some good individual performances, that's the reason why the Sacramento Kings are 42-27," said Blazers interim head coach Kevin Pritchard. "They're a hell of a team. They are going to make some runs in the playoffs."

Sacramento started the game with a 9-2 run and led by 11 points at the end of the first quarter when Bibby fed Thomas for a dunk which made the score 30-19.

The Kings then reeled off six straight points to start the second period and grabbed a commanding 38-21 advantage after Corliss Williamson's jumper with 8:41 remaining before intermission, capping a 12-1 spurt which began late in the first quarter.

Portland then outscored Sacramento 11-4 over the next three minutes, with six points coming from Stoudamire, to cut its deficit to 42-32. A three-point play by Stoudamire with 49 seconds left in the half brought the Blazers within 53-47, but Bibby would later bury a jump shot just prior to the buzzer to send the Kings into the locker room with a 57-49 advantage.

Buckets by Przybilla and Darius Miles to start the second half trimmed the lead to 57-53. After the two teams exchanged buckets, Stojakovic hit three foul shots and Mobley followed with a triple to ignite a 10-3 run which extended Sacramento's margin to 69-58 midway through the third quarter.

The Kings took an 86-70 lead into the final 12 minutes. Portland got as close as 10 points down, 97-87, with 5 1/2 minutes to go, but Mobley's three-pointer began a string of nine straight points which put the game out of reach.

Game Notes

Kings center Brian Skinner missed the game due to sprained thumbs in both hands...Adelman has a 700-438 career record in 15 seasons...Portland lost for the eighth straight time on the road and fell to 1-10 under Pritchard...Thomas had his highest point total since coming to the Kings from Philadelphia as part of the Chris Webber trade last month.
