(Friday, March 18th)
Final Score: Memphis 88, Minnesota 83
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Jason Williams scored 17 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to an 88-83 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves at FedExForum.
Bonzi Wells and Lorenzen Wright added 16 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who have won four of their last five games. Mike Miller poured in 14 points and James Posey had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Memphis is one game behind Houston for the sixth seed out of the Western Conference and 3 1/2 games up on Denver, which holds the eighth and final spot.
Kevin Garnett scored a game-high 30 points while collecting 19 rebounds and six assists for the Timberwolves, who have dropped two straight and four of their last six. Minnesota trails Denver by 2 1/2 games for the conference's last playoff spot.
"It's going to be hard to stop KG," said Wright. "He gets so many touches and he's such a great player. But I think we shut everybody else down. That was our plan."
Memphis led 41-35 at halftime and 58-57 after three quarters, but a layup by Troy Hudson 1:23 into the fourth put Minnesota up 61-60.
A dunk by Wright with 10:21 left put the Grizzlies back on top and a slam by Shane Battier gave them a 64-61 lead with 9:48 to play.
A turnaround jumper by Garnett brought the Timberwolves to within 69-67 with 6:34 remaining, but a three-pointer by Williams put Memphis up 72-67 with about six minutes left.
A hook shot by Wright gave the Grizzlies a seven-point lead before a dunk by Eddie Griffin pulled Minnesota to within three at 74-71 with 4:31 remaining.
However, that would be as close as the Timberwolves would get from there. A three-pointer by Wells put Memphis up 77-71 with 3:31 to play and the lead never dipped below five the rest of the way.
"We couldn't come up with a big stop when we needed it," said Minnesota head coach Kevin McHale.
