NBA Game Summary - New York at Atlanta

(Friday, March 18th)

Final Score: New York 106, Atlanta 92

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Stephon Marbury had 24 points and Tim Thomas recorded 23 points to lead the New York Knicks over the Atlanta Hawks, 106-92 at Philips Arena.

Kurt Thomas added 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks for the Knicks, who ended a two-game slide and won for the third time in five outings. Mike Sweetney tallied 14 points and eight boards and Jamal Crawford had 12 points and 10 assists for New York, which used tough defense down the stretch to pull out the win.

Boris Diaw-Riffiod tied a career-high with 17 points and added eight rebounds for the Hawks, who have dropped four straight and 17 of 18. Josh Smith netted 16 points and eight boards for Atlanta, which played without a pair of starters.

Forward Al Harrington and guard Josh Childress each missed the game. Harrington sat out his first contest with lower back soreness and Childress missed his first game with the flu.

The Hawks battled back from a 13-point deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, 86-86, when Tom Gugliotta drained a pair of free throws with 3:23 elapsed in the fourth quarter.

That, however, would be it for Atlanta. New York answered with a 15-2 run to take control. Tim Thomas had five points and Kurt Thomas had four during the run, which was capped by a Crawford three-pointer with 2:43 remaining for a 101-90 cushion.

"First of all we were out there playing like some bums for three quarters," said New York's Jerome Williams. "We came back and got our heads right and locked in in the fourth quarter."

Gugliotta had eight points and Tony Delk had 14 for the Hawks, who have lost six straight at home.

"The fourth quarter caught us again," said Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson. "Coming down the stretch we missed 14 straight shots. It puts too much pressure on you to defend on the other end and get stops, and they made shots."

New York led 25-17 after one quarter and 53-43 going into halftime. The Knicks held a slim 81-78 edge going into the fourth quarter.
