NBA Game Summary - Chicago at Seattle
(Friday, March 11th)
Final Score: Chicago 100, Seattle 97
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Ben Gordon netted 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and scored the go-ahead basket with 12.5 seconds left as Chicago earned a 100-97 victory over Seattle at KeyArena.
Eddy Curry added 18 points and eight rebounds while Antonio Davis contributed 13 points to the Bulls' third straight win.
"The key for us is building character and a foundation and being in a position to win and compete in the fourth quarter," said Davis of the youthful and improving Bulls.
Rashard Lewis recorded 27 points for the SuperSonics but missed two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining which would have sent the game into overtime. Ray Allen finished with 17 in the loss and Reggie Evans pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds before leaving with an ankle injury late in the contest.
Seattle, which has dropped three in a row for the first time this season, grabbed a 97-96 lead on Nick Collison's put back with 20.7 seconds left. However, Gordon drove the lane on the ensuing possession and swished home a runner to put Chicago back up by one.
Allen then had his shot rejected by Tyson Chandler and Chris Duhon made 1-of-2 free throws after being fouled with 4.5 seconds on the clock to make the score 99-97. Lewis was then hacked by Curry inside, but misfired on the first attempt. He then intentionally missed the second and Chandler grabbed the carom to preserve the win.
"We were able to contain (Seattle)," said Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich. "They are so powerful on offense."
Lewis netted 11 first-quarter points and drained back-to-back three-pointers to start a 13-2 run which gave the Sonics a 21-11 lead with four minutes left in the frame.
Chicago closed the gap to 27-21 by period's end, then began the second quarter with a 7-0 burst to move ahead. Chandler's three-point play with 10:18 remaining before intermission capped the flurry and gave the Bulls a 28-27 edge.
Seattle was up 51-48 in the final minute of the half, but three-pointers by Eric Piatkowski and Hinrich put the Bulls back in front. Two made free throws by Lewis right before the buzzer would pull Seattle within 54-53 at the break.
Chicago extended its lead to 75-69 heading into the final 12 minutes.
