Final Score: Boston 103, Milwaukee 97
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Ricky Davis scored a game-high 27 points, Paul Pierce added 26 and Boston defeated a struggling Milwaukee squad, 103-97, at the FleetCenter.
Raef LaFrentz added 13 while David West and Mark Blount each contributed 10 points for Boston, which has won two in a row and three of four. The Celtics remain 3 1/2 games ahead of Philadelphia for first place in the Atlantic Division. The Sixers defeated Charlotte, 106-103, on Wednesday night.
"We got a big win," said Davis. "We had to fight them (Milwaukee) off."
Desmond Mason paced the Bucks with 23 points. Dan Gadzuric posted a double- double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Joe Smith chipped in 16 for reeling Milwaukee, which has dropped 12 of its last 15 games.
The Bucks played without top scorer Michael Redd, who missed the game with tendinitis in his left Achilles.
"We feel good about the effort we gave," said Milwaukee head coach Terry Porter. "Our guys busted their tales for 48 minutes - if a couple shots had gone down, who knows. I'm really proud of the way they just came out tonight and competed."
Trailing 76-70 heading into the fourth, Boston grabbed the lead thanks to a quick 9-2 spurt to start the final period. Pierce's trey from the corner ended the run, giving the home team a 79-78 edge.
Boston would then gain some breathing room after Davis nailed a short jumper to make it 96-89 with 2:07 to go. Milwaukee, though, would slice the deficit to 96-93 late, but Blunt answered with a jumper to push the score to 98-93 with 26.9 seconds remaining in the contest.
However, the Bucks would not go quietly as Mason's three-point play with 18 seconds to go pulled the visitors to within a 99-97 score. The Celtics, though, would hit three-of-four free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
"I don't have a lot to say - just a good win for us," said Boston head coach Doc Rivers.
Boston led 26-21 after one quarter of play, but Milwaukee grabbed the lead in the second. The Bucks started the second quarter on a 12-4 run, capped by Anthony Goldwire's layup, staking the visitor's to a 33-30 lead with under eight minutes left in the first half.
The Bucks then led 49-47 heading into the locker room. Davis paced all players with 16 points for the Celtics, while Gadzuric netted nine points for the Bucks at the break.
"We have to go in and get Jersey," Davis added on the Celtics next game against the streaking Nets.
