NBA Game Summary - Dallas at Houston

(Sunday, March 6th)

Final Score: Houston 90, Dallas 69

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Tracy McGrady poured in 32 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, as the Houston Rockets defeated the injury-riddled Dallas Mavericks, 90-69, at the Toyota Center.

The Mavericks suffered their lowest output of the season, as they played without forward Dirk Nowitzki, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, and guard Michael Finley, who is second on the club in scoring. Nowitzki is bothered by a sore knee, while Finley sat out his second straight contest with a bruised left calf.

Yao Ming collected 14 points and 11 boards for the Rockets, who have won 10 of their last 14 contests. Juwan Howard and David Wesley each scored 11 points for Houston. Howard also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Jason Terry paced Dallas with 20 points. Keith Van Horn chipped in 12 points and seven boards for the Mavericks, who have dropped three in a row.

Houston took control in the fourth quarter, as the Rockets opened the period with a 19-4 burst to increase their lead to 80-59. McGrady hit a pair of three-pointers and totaled eight points during the decisive spurt.

McGrady later converted a three-point play to stake Houston to a commanding 85-62 advantage with just over three minutes remaining. The margin would reach 24 at 88-64 on a basket by Ryan Bowen with 1:58 left.

The Rockets used an 8-0 run in the first quarter, keyed by McGrady's three- pointer, to take a 16-11 lead. The Mavericks then scored the next five points to tie the contest and the rest of the period stayed tight.

Houston led 20-18 after 12 minutes and then began the second quarter with a 17-6 spurt to grab a 37-24 lead. McGrady netted nine points during the surge.

Dallas battled back and cut the deficit to 39-33 on a jumper by Terry with 1:21 left in the period. Jon Barry then answered with a three-pointer on Houston's next possession and Wesley followed with a basket to push the advantage back to 11.

The Rockets eventually carried a 44-35 lead into the locker room. McGrady ended the first half with 16 points, despite leaving the game briefly to get six stitches in his chin.

After Houston scored the first two points of the third quarter, the Mavericks responded with a 12-0 burst to move in front 47-46. Terry and Jerry Stackhouse each had six points during the run.

The Rockets came right back with an 8-0 spurt, including six points by Yao, to regain a seven-point edge with 6:25 remaining in the period. Houston held a 61-55 advantage after 36 minutes.
