NBA Game Summary - Denver at Portland

(Saturday, April 2nd)

Final Score: Denver 103, Portland 97

Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points and Denver put together a strong fourth quarter to come away with a 103-97 victory over Portland at the Rose Garden.

Earl Boykins contributed 17 points for the Nuggets, who strung together a 14-0 run to erase a three-point deficit with under seven minutes remaining. Denver, which has won three straight and nine of 10, received 16 points and seven assists from Andre Miller in the triumph.

With the win the surging Nuggets moved a half-game in front of Memphis for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race.

Damon Stoudamire racked up 27 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim compiled 20 points and eight rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have dropped four in a row and 11 of 12. Rookie Sebastian Telfair established a career-high with 10 assists and finished with 16 points.

Portland held an 86-83 lead before Anthony fueled the Nuggets' game-deciding spurt. The second-year star fed Nene's slam with 5:35 left which put Denver ahead 87-86, then hit a short jumper on the visitors' next possession for a three-point edge.

Back-to-back baskets by DeMarr Johnson lengthened the cushion to seven and Anthony registered the final four points of the run, including a jumper with 1:28 to play which gave the Nuggets a comfortable 97-86 advantage.

Portland fought back from a 62-54 halftime deficit behind Stoudamire, who had 11 third-quarter points. His three-pointer with 4:54 left in the period put the Blazers up 72-71 and the hosts maintained a one-point lead, 80-79, heading into the final 12 minutes.

Denver trailed 31-26 after one quarter and was still down by five points near the midway point of the second. The Nuggets then outscored Portland 21-7 over a 4 1/2 minute stretch to build a 60-51 advantage late in the first half.

Miller, who netted eight points during the burst, gave Denver a 48-47 edge with a basket near the five-minute mark of the second quarter. Portland would regain the lead at 51-50 on Abdur-Rahim's jumper less than a minute later, but the Nuggets responded with 10 consecutive points.

Two made free throws by Anthony extended the margin to nine with 1:29 remaining before intermission and Denver took a 62-54 lead into the break.
