NBA Game Summary - Golden State at Memphis

(Tuesday, March 1st)

Final Score: Memphis 99, Golden State 97

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Shane Battier scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies held on to defeat the Golden State Warriors, 99-97, at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies hosted their first-ever weekday afternoon game and it followed a special Read to Achieve Celebration, where elementary school students in grades one through four were rewarded for their achievements.

Brian Cardinal netted 20 points and Mike Miller contributed 19 points and nine rebounds for Memphis, which has won two in a row after a four-game losing streak.

Jason Richardson paced Golden State with 29 points. Mickael Pietrus had 17 points and Mike Dunleavy added 16 for the Warriors, who have dropped two straight and five of their last seven contests.

The game was tied early in the third quarter, before the Grizzlies went on an 11-0 spurt, highlighted by eight points from Miller, to grab a 64-53 advantage.

Memphis continued to pull away and consecutive three-point shots by Cardinal staked the Grizzlies to an 82-66 lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the period.

Memphis eventually held an 86-75 advantage after 36 minutes.

Golden State then stormed back in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 96-95 on a driving layup by Baron Davis with 59.6 seconds left.

On the next possession for the Grizzlies, Battier and Lorenzen Wright missed shots and the Warriors got the rebound. However, Miller stole the ball from Richardson and was fouled with 10.4 seconds remaining.

Miller proceeded to hit both free throws to make it 98-95. After Davis converted another layup to again pull Golden State within a point, James Posey was fouled with 5.2 seconds left and sank 1-of-2 attempts from the stripe, giving Memphis a 99-97 lead.

The Warriors then elected to go for the win, but Davis misfired from three- point range. Richardson grabbed the rebound, but his off-balance jumper from 15 feet away was off the mark as time expired.

The first quarter was tight throughout and ended with Golden State clinging to a 23-22 lead.

The Warriors extended their advantage to four points with 7:35 left in the second quarter and were still in front by three at 46-43 following a pair of free throws by Troy Murphy with three minutes remaining.

Memphis then closed the period with a 10-4 run, keyed by Cardinal's three- pointer, and carried a 53-50 lead into the locker room.
