NBA Game Summary - LA Lakers at New York

(Monday, February 28th)

Final Score: New York 117, LA Lakers 115 (OT)

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Tim Thomas scored 17 of his season-high 35 points in the third quarter, as the New York Knicks held on to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers, 117-115, in overtime at historic Madison Square Garden.

Thomas, who also had his best point-total as a Knick, connected on 13-of-19 shots from the floor to lead the Knicks to their fifth straight win at home and season-high-matching third straight win overall.

"I'm healthy, and mentally my mind is free of everything," Thomas said. "I thought I broke a glass or something, because it seemed like everything was going wrong. I tried to stay positive and be patient, because I knew at some time it was going to turn around."

Michael Sweetney matched career-highs with 19 points and 12 rebounds for New York, which topped the 100-point mark for the ninth time in its last 12 games.

Kobe Bryant had 30 points, including a long three-pointer to even the game late in regulation, for Los Angeles, which fell for the third consecutive game and slipped to 3-8 over its last 11 games away from home.

Los Angeles, which trailed by double-digits for a majority of the fourth quarter, got back in the game with an 11-1 run late to draw within two, 106-104, with 19 seconds remaining.

Stephon Marbury was then fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws. Los Angeles got the rebound and brought it upcourt, and Bryant nailed a long-three to knot the game at 107 with 4.4 seconds remaining.

Four different Lakers hit three-pointers in the final 46 seconds to even the game.

Jamal Crawford got a shot off for the Knicks as time expired, but it was not close and the game went to overtime.

Tied at 115 in the extra session, Marbury nailed a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining.

On the Lakers ensuing possession Bryant dribbled down the lane and dished off to an open Luke Walton, who gave it right back. Bryant, though, fumbled the pass and time ran out, as the Knicks pulled out the two-point win.

"It was a mix-up in communication," Bryant said. "I kicked it to Luke and thought he had a pretty good look. He fired it back to me and I bobbled it."

Tied at 47 at the break, the Knicks seemingly blew the game wide open in the third quarter, as they outscored LA 36-21 to carry a 15-point advantage into the final 12 minutes.

The two teams played a tightly contested first quarter, but Sweetney's layup with just under a minute to play proved to be the difference, as the Knicks carried a 25-23 edge into the second quarter.

Neither team managed to distinguish itself in the second quarter, as each team traded the lead back and forth. Leading by one, Bryant outscored the Knicks 6-2 over a stretch and gave the Lakers a 47-42 edge with just over two minutes remaining in the half.

However, Thomas closed the half with five straight points and the two teams went into the locker room tied.
